Dexter Scott King- the son of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr has died suddenly at the age of 62. ATLANTA – The King Center is saddened to announce the passing of Dexter Scott King, the youngest son and third child of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King.

King, who was 62, died of prostate cancer on January 22, at his home in Malibu, according to Leah Weber King, his best friend of 21 years and wife of 11 years, as reported by the King Center. But he slept peacefully. He mentioned her heroic fight and dedication to bravely combat the disease.

Born Dexter Scott King on January 30, 1961, in Atlanta, he was named after Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. His father’s first pastor was in this church. He was the second son of Dr. and Mrs. King and was just seven years old when his father was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968. Following in his father’s footsteps, he grew up in Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, where his grandfather served as pastor. A graduate of Frederick Douglass High School, he followed his father’s legacy and became involved in football and various school organizations before attending Morehouse College in Atlanta.

“The son of a civil rights icon took up the mantle as a member of the family that his dad proposed to legally protect his work and sued to pursue it. He devoted his life to his dad’s legacy and his Dexter was dedicated to the continued protection of intellectual property (IP). At the time of Dexter’s death, he was serving dual roles – Chairman of the King Center and President of the King Estate. His dedication to being well-versed in intellectual property law Was a result of and was a part of his dad and mom’s memory.

He was intrigued by the striking resemblance to his dad, and played him in the 2002 television movie “The Rosa Parks Story.” The artist had a love for the creative arts and initially decided to relocate to California to pursue acting. But family duty called and he answered, balancing his love of art and his duties to the King family legacy during the last part of his life.
